CATHERINE FOSTER (CAT)
Cat is the narrator and a most unreliable source! She has been teaching painting forever in her small Midwestern town and knows almost everyone there as well as everything about them.
So it's no surprise to her that she knows each of the members of her Tuesday Night Painting class are living ideal lives. After all, most of them have been meeting together for ten years and even those who have recently joined the class fit in so well, Cat has no qualms saying this:
All of her students live happy, fulfilled lives with lots of love surrounding them.
She's just a bit concerned about the crazy actions of her next door neighbor and best friend - who left her husband David and has now gone and got herself and her new spouse murdered. It jangles a bit with her whole idea of their small town life.
But beyond knowing her best friend, Annie, is now dead, she also knows - beyond doubt - that David did not kill her. Period.
Oh yes, there's one thing she is not sure of - is Annie's return as a spirit attributable to anything other than a late evening glass of wine? But there you are and she's willing to go along with it anyway. The It being solving her murder.
