In a word: Broccoli!!
I planted six plants and they were one of the first things to produce in June. Being first, the little florets were heavenly! And the lettuce was growing like crazy so there were some great salads.
Then the plants continued to produce. I froze and ate, froze and ate. I'm contemplating lots of broccoli cheese soup this winter. And, best of all, they're still producing. We had risotta this evening with garden tomatoes and small broccoli stalks.
And, as mentioned, the lettuce was great. Next year I'm doing lots of this - we had wonderful salad until that great HEAT hit. And some started again this fall. Next year, I'm going to make more of an effort to plant in the autumn. Things just kind of blahed out in August when that really hot weather came back again.
Also, speaking of peppers - they were hotter than usual. I was told this was due to the hot weather.
