The Official Start to the New
Gardening Year!!!
February is when I order seeds in great anticipation of the babies I will soon be putting to bed in their soil nurseries.
AND LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMATOES!! and Ciabatta and cheese -
I've found www.tomatofest.com to be a great resource. They offer great seeds at a reasonable price and carry lots of different tomato types, especially heirlooms.
The backbone of my gardens are tomatoes. And now I have even more reason. I've been taking a class offered by Coursera - this one from the University of San Francisco - on nutrition. In the class you must enter what you have eaten all day. No matter how many times I entered "ground beef and tomatoes" the sodium count was astronomical!. But when I entered "ground beef" and "raw tomatoes" it was just fine. With a bit of research, I learned that processed commercial tomatoes are very high in salt. As canned tomatoes are usually used with ground beef for many recipes, the program assumed that was what I was using.
As it is quite easy to freeze small packages of tomatoes -it is not only more economical to use homegrown ones but also more healthful! Win! Win!!
