Week One: January 25th

It looks like we're going to have a great group!  Some of us are new at producing art, and others have a lot of experience.  Some of us want to work in oils, others in waterbased media.  It should be lots of fun with lots of learning all around.  I'm sure you're going to find that you will learn from the other class members - yes, even the ones who are less experienced - as well as from me.  The most important thing to remember is that we are here to have a wonderful time and enjoy what we are creating!

During this first week, we visited the galleries and picked our favorite works.  Continue to keep these in mind as we work and see if you can start to see something in your own work that is like the work you picked.  Understanding what speaks to you will help you put that element into your own.

I think we agreed that it might be beneficial to see what are the differences and similarities in  media.  So, next week I'll be bringing some oil paint, watercolor and acrylic to demonstrate for you and help you determine which might work best for you.

We'll also be setting up a still life of objects and working with form and shadows.  So bring the media you would like to start with and a support (canvas or paper).  It should be fairly small as you'll be working ala prima and creating the painting in one setting.  Bring one object that you would like to add to our still life.
As always, those who have more experience and want to continue work on something they have started should free to do so.

The weather is going to be beautiful!  No snow!  No cold!  Or at least somewhere in the US that will be the case.  But we're going to have fun, anyway.

I visited the new art store last Friday and it is a treasure.  The people there are very nice and the inventory is large.  They have a catalogue but you can find just about anything in the store.  Its located in the Drake neighborhood, just around the corner from the Varsity theatre - midblock between 24th and 25th streets on the north side of the street.  There's a 50% off coupon in their catalogue.

Don't forget to bring your journal and pencils for the first class.  We are going to be visiting the galleries and we'll l

First Class Information

For our first class, we will be discussing our goals for the semester.  We'll also be doing some visiting in the galleries where we'll take notes for further discussion during the next few weeks.

So for this first class, please bring a journal (or sketchbook).  And some kind of writing utensils.  Hopefully, we'll have time to do some planning sketches, so you can bring other materials for that but don't feel like you need to have everything ready.

We'll discuss what you will be needing for the next class and talk about ordering on the internet.

Well - as all such things go - first my computer grabbed malware and had to take a visit to the hospital.  Now that I have it back, I can't get the 'reply' portion of comments to work.  So while, I'm figuring that part out, here are the answers to the comments you have made.

First - to Nancee:  I'm so looking forward to having you back in class.  Thanks for commenting!

Second - to Dawn:  it sounds like you have things well in hand.  We'll be discussing materials on the first day so you can make any decision about things you need at that time.  Welcome to the class!

Just a word about the supply list on the Dick Blick website.

For the first week we will be talking about where we hope to go this spring.
That should help us set goals for the rest of the semester.  I've placed a syllabus on another page as a guide but we will move along at a pace that is comfortable for everyone.    Please feel free to pursue other work beyond that I assign in place of an assignment that isn't a challenge to you.

After setting goals, we will be visiting the galleries.  Please bring pencil and paper (a small journal would be most helpful) as we'll be taking notes there.
I'll place more information about this as it gets nearer to the time of our first class.

Please comment on your expectations as well as any questions you might have before we begin.  I'll be checking this blog every few days.

I'm really looking forward to seeing old friends return and meeting new ones.
