Information from Don Andrews workshop

This was a very super workshop!  I learned a lot and wanted to share some of the things I learned with you.

About purchasing materials:

All materials are from Cheap Joe's catalog and website
He uses Robert Simmons synthetic brushes.  They are good quality for a more inexpensive price.
''
Don brought tubes of watercolors for us to experiment with.   They were great! The brand is American Journey from Cheap Joe's and once again, they are super quality at a better price.  The ones I particularly liked are:  copper kettle, joe's blue, harvest wheat, manganese blue, red hot momma, and halloween orange.

"When you take the viewer to the center of interest, you must entertain them."

Use shadows to connect and unify the painting:  "sacrifice everything in your painting for unity."

Con't paint the photograph.  Clothes and everything else should be there as a part of the painting.

Contrast is what makes a painting interesting.  It may be warm against cool, light against dark, busy against calm.

The best color is personal - not found in a tube.  "The best color is found."

Color must go to the value of the object.  "sky isn't blue - its light middle value blue."

Color emphasis is always found in the mid values.  When a color is very light or very dark, it loses its identity as a color.    Colorful paintings are based on middle values.

I think thats enough for this week.  We'll be taking about color and value in this week's class and I'll include more info from Don in next week's blog.

The address for the Dick Blick catalog is
www.dickblick.com/lists/blicku

You should reach a page showing the lists.
Look at the Dickblicku lists
There should be one for Confident Painting with the Des Moines Art Center
Click that for the list.

Actually, you might wait unless you need them right now -
I have some info from this workshop about brushes.

Remember I won't be with you this week.  I'll be attending a watercolor workshop and hope to bring back lots of new stuff for you.

Stan Miller will be your teacher this week.  He has lots of experience and knowledge and will be able to answer all your questions.

Your assignment is to finish a painting in class using the sketches you completed last week.

We will be looking at them next week to see how well you have understood the concepts we discussed last week.  Jot down any problems you are having as you paint and how and if you solved them.  Painting is really a problem solving exercise and we can all help each other as we discover how to solve our difficulties.
Remember that difficulties aren't a reason to fret - they are a chance to grow!

Confident Painting

Hello  Painters!

Something new!   I'm trying out a blog for the students in the Confident Painting Class at the Des Moines Art Center.

I will check this every day for any comments or questions.   If you have a question, please add it to the comments and I will answer in a blog form.  Also feel free to share any websites, books, or other inspirations that come up.  That way we are all a community of ideas and can learn from each other.

Please check this blog on the weekend before a class.  If I have any materials you will be needing or any other information about the class, I'll post it here.

In this class I'll be drawing from materials found in the following book:
Mastering Composition:                                                                techniques and principles to dramatically improve  your painting
The author is Ian Roberts.

As we go along, there will be other painters we will use as well as inspirations.

Handouts for the class will take the form of a page on this website.  You may find it by going to:
    more tab
    confident color class tab

A syllabus is posted on the page.  That way, you will be able to look ahead to see if there is anything you will be needing in the future.  As the session goes forward, I will be adding to the syllabus.  You will know what is new material as it will be posted in color.

I'm excited about using this form of technology to enhance your learning and our communitcations in the class.

See you next Wednesday!
